While the legal world has seen an increase in the number of lawyers who have left their current jobs since the pandemic began in March 2020, the survey found that many lawyers in the profession have changed jobs rather than leave them entirely. The numbers may suggest that lawyers are not necessarily dissatisfied with their career choices, but are looking for a change of scenery. Finally, here are three ways to kick-start the process whenever you`re ready to find a way to leave your legal job forever. The pandemic triggered the Great Resignation, but it didn`t start there. Another welfare issue is the reluctance of law firms to use legal technology. There are new products that could significantly reduce the stress and exhaustion associated with reviewing hundreds of pages of documents. Of course, these products would likely increase efficiency and productivity within the company, so the reluctance to adopt new technologies can be even more frustrating for employees. It`s no secret that law is a stressful profession. Many lawyers struggle with anxiety, and the statistics on the mental health of the legal profession are bleak. There are several suspected reasons for legal turnover, including: And because the legal job market is so competitive, lawyers and law firms often use prestige as an artificial measure to weed out candidates, confirming the idea that prestige is an inherent asset. While there are many articles encouraging lawyers to change careers, saying that lawyers are excellent project managers, journalists, CFOs, etc., I think a relatively new lawyer trying to leave the practice makes the job search more complicated than otherwise. You can be creative and happy while remaining a lawyer. Don`t believe what you hear in the profession. You get and can do what you want with your life. Silent resignation is the new trend gripping the internet, but while some argue that the concept only sets boundaries and levels work-life balance, others see it as a worrying proliferation of a “lazy” mentality. “I gave up law 7 years ago to become a nurse. I got a bit of anti-aircraft gun, but I didn`t care,” the commentator wrote. “Even with Covid, I still enjoy being a bedside nurse in the intensive care unit.

I will never go back to court. But if that`s the case, why aren`t the same concerns leading to major career changes among lawyers? It may just be that change – even a good change – can be difficult. In June 2022, I completely retired from law firm life and active legal practice. I said goodbye to colleagues I had worked with for over a decade and stopped working even longer. The term, inspired by a Chinese TikTok trend known as #Tangping — or “lying flat” — means “quietly” separating yourself from your work: doing a little more than the bare minimum, working no later than your contract hours, and never going beyond what`s required. And it`s happening, albeit “quietly,” among much of the workforce — a recent Gallup poll found that half of Americans already say they`re “quietly quitting” their jobs.
